Colombian Mochila - Walls #2

The Arhuaco bags or Tutu are a representation of cultural identity, a costume, and a working instrument. They are made from sheep´s wool from different types of stitching that give particular appearances and degrees of elasticity, according to the intended use. The crafting of the bags is a feminine activity that represents fertility, femininity and the maternal womb. Each drawing encompasses a reason and a representation of their cosmology.

Each mochila is hand-made and takes about 30 days to craft, therefore each bag is completely unique.

The Arhuaco reservation inhabits the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a ridge that is located in northern Colombia in territories comprising the departments of Cesar, Guajira, and Magdalena. This specific bag was crafted in the Cesar region, by a women's co-op whose aim is to keep the tradition alive for generations to come.

These artisanal bags are worn by both men and women. Join the fair trade movement.
